Kill dog?
So I walk outside my house, my dog clearly needs to be put down. I find an ax, and I'm swinging this thing 100 times, yet my dog is still alive, just suffering? How do I put my dog down man?

This game is sad :(

Though sad, I had no problem with this part, however my fiancee and my sister both would probably not be able to even watch me play the game. Killing people is fine, killing animals is not, they can't get over it.

It is strange isn't it? In videogames people kill eachother without batting an eye. Yet if you have to kill a dog or cat people (Some of us anyway) get emotional.

Its because we are trained to kill people are entire life.
From the moment we are born, were trained to be killers.

That is for the weak minded. Look at those girls who stabbed their friend because of slinderman, weak minded fools will fall for the deception.

We hunted and killed animals long before we killed people.

I blame it on puppy calendars.

Agreed. They are weak minded defeatists.

I didn't think that I could backtrack and kill the dog (to put it out of its misery). But then I read this thread so I tried it. I also had SFX volume cranked up, and when that poor dog died, the (real-life) stray dogs outside my apartment started barking furiously for a few minutes.

Man, that was so weird, I had to share it with others...

It's natural to feel bad ending the life of a animal that is usually concidered as a family member (a dog in this case). I mean it just plain and simple sucks. When i was younger i had to put down two of our very old and sick dogs, and it still hunts me even today. To make it worse, those days we didn't have any sort of guns and "putting down" a pet by a needle was very rare possibility, so it was plain and simple by braking the neck with your hands. It was the "way to do it" those days, and as a pet owner you solely were responsible to do it.

Thankfully that's not the case these days.

I think it's the disconnect between you understanding why the animal has to be put down, but the animal does not. At least that's what's always bugged me about having to do the old yeller routine. You want to explain it somehow and make the animal understand that you're doing it for their own good, but it's impossible. I grew up on and around a ranch and occasionally we had to shoot colts / calfs / whatever that were born with severe birth defects and it never got any easier.

People kill other people without thinking about it in games because there's motive. That person is trying to kill you, is the bad guy, or is your opposition. There's consensual engagement and understanding between the combatants. When it comes to sick animals you're killing something that doesn't understand what's happening, even though the action has the best of intentions.

Actually, it's because we tend to connect to animals more easily. In videogames, we ARE trained to "kill the bad guys"; we'll naturally justify to ourselves why it's okay to kill Random McDude 3. In this case, the dog has done no wrong and is clearly in pain. Combine that with the fact that a dog's whines naturally sound at a level that invokes feelings of pity, pain, and occasionally fear in a human brain. If you DON'T feel any sort of uncomfortableness in killing it (even in a known fantasy environment), then you may legitimately have some sociopathic tendencies. Thanks, psychology degree!

To reply to the original post: That's odd. The game seems to prefer that you perform the chargeable overhead chop on the dog's head or upper body. I've never actually attempted the horizontal swing on it. Additionally, the tutorial is known to be somewhat buggy.

It's called compassion. You've either got it, or you don't.
