Purpose of medium caliber magazine?
I honestly can't say that there is a need for an assault rifle.
I know you can get a weapon that fires the medium caliber bullets.
Does that weapon use the magazines as well as single rounds?

I agree that having a fully auto spray weapon (such as an AR) is pretty much overkill, you will get by with just melee, pistols, shotty, throwables, traps, etc. but it's good to have an OP weapon around as a fun luxury item (if you wanna go full rambo mode).

One thing that prevents the AR from being too OP is the fact that there are only a limited number of mags/clips for it in the game, because they are found items which cannot be bought from traders (also non-craftable)..

I think the most amount of mags you might ever find throughout the game would be around 12 maybe, but during a typical playthrough where you perhaps don't search absolutely every single crate and dig pile you might typically find 7 or 8 (maybe less, maybe more, sometimes it depends on the RNG of the locations that contain randomized loot.. I think the most amount I've had in a playthrough is around 15 maybe).

As you've noticed, the single medium caliber rounds (which are for a hunting rifle) can be bought from traders, so rifle ammo is replenishable (just like pistol & shotty ammo) ..this means that the pistol, shotty & hunting rifle are always viable (as long as you can afford the ammo) but the AR can become obsolete after its finite/limited amount of ammo runs out..

..with this in mind you could even treat the AR (and it's ammo) as valuable trade items, selling it off to create funds to keep your mainstay weapons & survival items stocked up..

Alternatively, if you are doing a permadeath run and you find yourself in a situation that leaves you near death you could keep the AR handy (in your hotbar) and pull it out in emergency (kinda like a get out of jail free card, or extra life).

Too bad you can't strip the magazine for the ammo.
Or have the option to craft the magazine.

I wouldn't mind that at all, or an SKS in place of the AK.
