I bought the game through GOG and have 0 problems using my controller, I really think it is the steam client messing!
If controller is not working it might be something to do with personal settings. I use a ps5 controller (or xbox controller) on the steam version, I don't think I had to configure anything to get them to work, they just worked right away (there is a setting in the in-game menu to enable controller though).
Just bought the game and wasn't happy about the gamepad gameplay, thanks for pointing that out it feels much better on version 1.4 !
It actually does support controllers I tried it a while back with one on steam. I really prefer mouse and keyboard for dark wood there’s just way to much inventory management. I think controllers and m/k both work well for different kind of games.
