That makes sense, though you could still probably get some junk metal out of the scraps it left behind. At least you would still see the remains of the trap there instead of it just vanishing completely.
Weird... I could've sworn I failed to dismantle 3 different bear traps and got nothing. Guess I just never noticed.. I feel dumb now :P
My guess was that the character was attempting to safely disengage the tension mechanism that allows a bear trap to snap shut by messing with the springs instead of the trigger paddle. Messing with it in the wrong way WOULD cause the trap to suddenly spring, and potentially break a rusty trap or take off a hand that is in the wrong place. The easiest way to disarm a bear trap in reality is to just toss a hefty rock on the paddle that springs it, or to press it with a particularly long stick while shielding your eyes from the resulting splinters.
I do find it odd that bear traps are single-use items in-game when looked at from a realistic perspective; even an old, rusty trap would not always break from its first use. This is a balance issue though, since they are the greatest thing for locking down your base. If all bear traps were reusable then you would eventually find yourself with three traps covering every single entrance of your base. Perhaps we shall be able to craft them in the future using four Junks (two for the blades, two for the tripping mechanism) and a Wire (for the tension spring)?
