Where are you on the map?
I open the map, and it does not show your current location... What's the point of having a map? If there were better location surrounding clues, that would be one thing, but the map is pretty useless in the current state imo.

The developers intentionally keep you from seeing your characters location, this does two main things from what I can tell.

1) It causes you to explore more and focus more on finding and understanding the geographical locations that become marked so you can move to another area from landmarks, this not only let's you learn the map by heart much faster, but it's also more involved in terms of exploration.

2) There's that eerie feeling that you could be lost at any moment >:)

just move in cardinal directions from landmarks and you should be fine dude

^ also its pretty hard to run short/medium distances and not hit a new landmark

Im pretty sure in real life you don't open a map and a little red dot appears with the text "You are here!". Its just like using a real map, you just need to remember where landmarks are and you should be fine. Besides, it makes the suspense so much better! (:

^ realistic survival and brutal difficulty is the main focus of this game. It's also why we love it if you think about it ;)

That's why I really respect the developers and this game, it feels so real when I'm the character I feel like I'M slamming that door and I'M throwing the molotov and I'M just a guy reading a map and I'M trying to run back to my house in the dark D:
