I went down the church basement but

there were huge dogs, corpses, radio, apple box, wardlobes, but no items, nothing else.

did I miss something?

It's in the waredrobe in the area you see directly across from you when you enter, as in the last room, near the radio.

have you talked to the wolf about the box you got from the dream at the chursh... i don't know if you can find the key if you do not as you don't know what you are looking for there.

There is a huge dog in the deepest area. Kill it and you will find a key from it

It is quite easy to miss the key, you have to interact with and search absolutely everything. You might be missing an interact prompt on a corpse if there is something else covering it, even if this is not the case a thorough search of every inch of floor space should work (it can take a few sweeps).

In the end I gave up, I am at my second run, I got it during my first one, I don't know how many times I died in the basement looking for that damn key this time. You know what, I can survive even without it!!!!

I had this problem as well, ended up discovering I couldn't interact with the wardrobe by the radio with controller, had to switch to mouse and keyboard then it searched fine.

Happened the same to me. It was impossible to interact with controller, but with mouse it worked. Thank you Ensaurus.
By the way, I didn't have to fight any chompers. There simply weren't any chompers in the basement.
I think the chompers appear if you disturb the corpses, for example if you turn the radio on or if you step over the corpses or open them.
I didn't turn on the generator, entered in the basement with the lamp equiped, didn't destroy any corpse while I was collecting the objects and I went out.
