ONLY 8 PERCENT OF PEOPLE HAVE MADE IT TO THE SECOND CHAPTER??
just got to the next chapter in Darkwood for the first time, and looking at the achievement percentage made me sad.

Have this many people really not gotten through this game?

its a shame ):

This game very gud.

Pretty standard; most Steam games go unfinished.

I used to fall into this pit a while ago but i've been trying to get through more games recently cuz i realised it was getting kinda ridiculous.

This also made me sad. I think it's a mixture of "I don't wanna die anymore" vs people slowly losing interest on singleplayer games (me included). The game has to be phenomenal (like Darkwood) to make want to play it

I just finished my first play through and have no steam achievements at all. Maybe the stats aren't totally correct.

I stopped playing three years ago after getting to the village and only just finished the game yesterday :spiffo:

It was in recent Humble Choice and lots of new players have it sitting in their library.

They possible got to scared.....
Only 3.1 % reached the ending, but for a hardcore experience like this it's not too bad i've seen games with 0.X % completion due to attention attrition

That's interesting. It's probably a case of people being too scared to finish it or feeling like it takes a bit too long (although it entirely depends on how quickly you decide to progress really). Pretty sure most people could finish the game, I guess it's just a case of people not wanting to, may be not even getting that far in and losing interest because they didn't do well enough at first or felt like there was nothing to keep them going. I still haven't finished the game once, but I only play periodically.

I'm likely the minority here but I don't play games to finish them. Completion means absolutely nothing to me. For most games I play, the experience itself is much more rewarding than the conclusion of it. You could even say that I go out of my way to avoid finishing games.

I think a lot of people and devs themselves lose sight of how well the gameplay can stand by itself to fulfil the desires of those seeking just that, to preserve and enjoy a certain point of progression while mechanics allow it.

Perhaps it's the arrogance of devs for thinking their games are worth finishing. Ignoring the possibility that just because a game has good gameplay doesn't mean the story progression is anywhere near as satisfying.

For me, games like Fallout 3 fit that description nicely, And so does Darkwood. I may have over 4k hours in Fallout, but that's not indicative of the story being any good, although I'm pretty sure it could be for some people.

Back when I used to play Darkwood and when Darkwood would actually allow it, I loved being able play it like a survival/horror/rpg/base defence game. I loved nothing more than farming resources so that I could make bases the best I could and endure the coming night. I actually really enjoyed the combat. I loved the freedom one used to have by holding up in their favourite area, slogging it out and trading by day and preparing for the troubling night ahead.

Alas, that's gone now, And with it my desire to play. I had no interest in progressing the story. The game world was beautifully dark, depressing and ominous. The combat was satisfying, looting and trading was supremely fun in such an obscure setting- All I wanted was to live in that moment, but now the game arrogantly forces and hurries you to the end like it assumes it's story is the only thing that matters.

It's probably apparent that I'm not on good terms with this game. I genuinely hate the direction they took after A4.2 And I have not played at all since that divergence. But I am willing to admit, they had something truly special and unique for a while. But now my very reason for playing it is gone. The cycle is over so quickly now that's it's not even worth doing at all for me.

The game is definitely better off with a story and progression to the end honestly. Sandbox survival in and of itself, while it would be good to have the option to stay in the woods for as long as you like (there is no renewable way of getting resources aside from traders, so unless you can survive on what you get from reputation alone long-term, you have to move forward), to me and I'm sure many other people playing through the game and seeing it to the end is more interesting than just plain survival. You get to enjoy about 20 hours of a full play through regardless, and have harder modes to try out as well. To me, a good game is one that has enjoyable gameplay and has some sort of end in sight instead of pure sandbox. Anyone can make a pure sandbox, but a well-crafted experience is on a whole another level.
