darkwood is really fun tho ill try my best to get to chapter 2
I think a lot of people and devs themselves lose sight of how well the gameplay can stand by itself to fulfil the desires of those seeking just that, to preserve and enjoy a certain point of progression while mechanics allow it.
Perhaps it's the arrogance of devs for thinking their games are worth finishing. Ignoring the possibility that just because a game has good gameplay doesn't mean the story progression is anywhere near as satisfying.
For me, games like Fallout 3 fit that description nicely, And so does Darkwood. I may have over 4k hours in Fallout, but that's not indicative of the story being any good, although I'm pretty sure it could be for some people.
Back when I used to play Darkwood and when Darkwood would actually allow it, I loved being able play it like a survival/horror/rpg/base defence game. I loved nothing more than farming resources so that I could make bases the best I could and endure the coming night. I actually really enjoyed the combat. I loved the freedom one used to have by holding up in their favourite area, slogging it out and trading by day and preparing for the troubling night ahead.
Alas, that's gone now, And with it my desire to play. I had no interest in progressing the story. The game world was beautifully dark, depressing and ominous. The combat was satisfying, looting and trading was supremely fun in such an obscure setting- All I wanted was to live in that moment, but now the game arrogantly forces and hurries you to the end like it assumes it's story is the only thing that matters.
It's probably apparent that I'm not on good terms with this game. I genuinely hate the direction they took after A4.2 And I have not played at all since that divergence. But I am willing to admit, they had something truly special and unique for a while. But now my very reason for playing it is gone. The cycle is over so quickly now that's it's not even worth doing at all for me.
