As you've noticed it can be quite easy to miss an event if you're situated on the other side of the hideout, but there are lots of audio & visual cues to look out for (if you decide to make a habit of interacting with night events).
The only way to understand the nature of every event is to let your curiosity take over and confront them. Once you've experienced all the different types of events you'll remember which methods to use to deal with each individual one (and learn which events are beneficial/rewarding).
The 'scripted night events' tend to only happen once per playthrough (they are usually story/lore related), so if you miss those you can try to catch them in the next playthrough. Whereas 'random night events' can happen with any kind of frequency (or infrequency!) throughout a standard run, these events are just mechanics to keep the player mobile & busy (and of course intrigued & scared).
It's good, because otherwise nights would be really boring, hiding in the dark in a corner.
that event you're talking about is "lovecraftian" interesting, i saw the text, i went to this dude near the bed and it was real... i tried to hit him (because why not) and i think I received the damage.... maybe he was talking to himself...
