Is there a time limit/rushing in this game?
I'm starting my first run on nightmare because I just like the idea of permadeath in some games. That also means it will take me some time to learn things and I was wondering if I need to rush in some things to survive? I don't know much about the game, except that nights are dangerous

No time limits, you can progress at any pace.

Playing on permadeath when trying to learn the game will be quite challenging but it can be a great way of learning the game and will pay off in the long run (because permadeath forces you to play the survival aspects of the game correctly), as long as you don't mind the process of dying and restarting repeatedly..

..I personally love that unforgiving process as it made me truly learn the game as opposed to just being a passenger where there were no consequences.

An alternative learning method could be to learn the absolute basics (resource management, combat, etc.) first on normal mode then dive right into nightmare (permadeath survival does make the player think about these mechanics a lot more). It will still require patience as you will still die/restart occasionally until you reach a certain experience threshold (but even when you have it mastered, permadeath still keeps it interesting)..

The concept of permadeath works so perfectly with this game, quite simply, survival games have to be permadeath (therefore it helps to think of nightmare as the default mode).. hopefully you will find that your unsuccessful 'training' runs will be just as intense and rewarding as your successful runs.

This is exactly what I like in this kind of games. Thanks for the answer it's good to know I don't need to make hasty decisions. One reason I wanted to start this on nightmare is I heard it was supposed to be a default difficulty for this, but because story/scale of the game got a lot bigger they made it optional

Aye. Nightmare is the canon difficulty and the only one that was available for most of Early Access. Player feedback and the growing game length got the other options added.

As far as speeding through this game goes, I feel like it might be possible to beat the game on Day 1. Was doing a Musician playthrough and upon retrieving the violin, I encountered the Musician playing at the church. Not sure if that was luck or if he's there after talking to him at the village (aside from his usual location I mean).

Assuming you know where to go for the Radio Tower on Chapter 2, I think I could see it being possible to beat the game on Day 1.

I feel like Hard mode seems perfect if you feel you are really ready for a challenge. You get some leverage with extra lives and make mistakes while also dreading to lose any lives at any point. Every death still matters, while in Nightmare mode you just can't die at all, and you could die in the cheapest way possible. I don't think even the best players in the game can handle combat all too well in tough situations, so Nightmare mode seems like a bit too much personally.

Yeah that's kind of unfortunate, you can just skip pretty much the whole game if you like. Makes for very boring speedruns of the game. It could do with some more necessary prerequisites for you to continue, because otherwise if you know about this fact, what is the point of not speeding through the game on harder difficulties when you may already know almost everything it has to offer?
