2. Bear traps. Set up bear traps on BOTH sides of every window and door that leads to you. Try to remain calm and don't move unless you think they are breaking into your specific room.
3. Barricade every single door/window even if they're not near you, this will waste enemies time. You should have PLENTY of wood to do this.
4. Bonus - pour gasoline on bear traps ahead of time so you can light enemies on fire and quickly dispatch them so you don't get overwhelmed.
For example if most deaths are caused by them bursting into your room (via a window or door) and you are finding that you don't have enough space to fight them, struggling to manoeuvre whilst getting hit, panicking with no exits.. the problem is the environment.
The game does a great job of scaring the player into hiding in small 'secure' areas, but actually these are the least safe places to be, this is where you are the most vulnerable.
So ideally you need to dominate as much of the hideout as possible, have a nice sized area that you can fight in, and run within, and escape from. Practice combat, get proficient with melee/pistol/shotty.
Don't worry about using light sources, light doesn't attract enemies (only noise does). Un-clutter the interior of rooms to give yourself floor space, because stuff will happen indoors and you don't want things to get in the way (furniture, etc.)..
Traps indoors are a liability, leave them outdoors and go outside to kill things (whether they are trapped or not). Outdoors is also the best place to evade/escape things to (banshees for example).
You will find going outside to kill things makes fights a lot easier than if you were indoors.. think about how much easy it is to fight something on open land than it is to fight them inside a walled room, especially when you're using a swingy melee weapon (shovel)..
..same deal with pistol, you can afford to miss shots if you're in a area that you can move around in (& reload).. if you've got your back to a wall you gotta hope you don't miss. The shotgun however excels indoors, it's perfect for close quarters (in rooms, corridors, etc.).
Other tips for night defence.. use armors & lanterns, always have them equipped (in hotbar) and have healing pills & flares available (in hotbar).. alongside your usual hotbar weapon options.
The bear traps inside ensures the grunts are easy prey when they run into it.
As above poster said: keep lantern, flares, pills etc on you and ready to use.
I also like to have premade bear traps in a cabinet close by in case I need to set another.
Also imo the axe is the best melee, it swings fast and causes good damage. Shovels ok, probably 2nd imo. But if you need melee I suggest working for the axe. Also keep in mind melee is useless against certain enemies as they just attack to fast. Such as the banshee's little peckers. Just pop them with pistol ammo, they are the rare exception where a shotgun or a rifle isn't just a bad idea it can get you killed cause of slow reload. So always have a pistol ready if you see a banshee.
