So many crates, so little codes
There are many crates which require codes in the game. I used to think that that magazines and such give you clues to various codes in nearby areas. But after trying out a whole bunch of 4-digit numbers from collectables on a few crates it doesn't appear I can use any of them unless they are for story progression and much more obvious. Seems like a missed opportunity, given there are a bunch of collectables which don't appear to have any particular use. I have seen people actually open some of the ones that I couldn't, so if you don't get codes from collectables all that much, where do you get them from?

There aren't many code crades i can think of.

Code storage in first hideout is for backers only

Code crate in village is related to pigshed

Code crates of wolfman aren't supposed to be opened but can be.

Yeh I know what you mean, there are a lot of story items which you pick up along the way that look like they might have some kind of info on them regarding codes, but most of the time they are just story items rather than clues..

When you do find something that has written numbers on it you can be fairly sure it relates to a code for a crate somewhere.

I quite like that the game tries to kid players into thinking everything is a clue, it does keep you guessing and make you think about the significance of every item you find.

The thing that initially confused me about crates was I didn't understand why in every playthrough I would never find any codes for any of the first few crates that you encounter in the game..

..I later found out it was because they were special crates that are technically not part of the game progression.. they were put in the game for different reasons..

..the hideout crate was for backers (a perk for backing the game) and the wolf crates contain vaulted items (which are locked behind a randomized code).

So if you take those 2 crates out of the equation (which are technically not supposed to be opened and are just for show) there are not as many crates as you would think there are, this simplifies things..

..of the remaining crates that are accessible you will pretty much know when you have the code for them.

Ok, but how? Is it some special method? They require codes, so obviously there have to be some. Is the code simply too cryptic to understand?

Not sure how I feel about backers-only crates. I do understand the want to give them a bonus though it stands there as a tease for other players who will never have the chance of getting anything from it during gameplay. For speed runners in particular, this sort of information could be essential. May be if the crates could be discovered later in the game as opposed to backers, would help with that, given that you can get them from some of the backers anyway.

It would have been cool to have the crates randomise some of the codes more so there's the needed element of discovery like it is with the map generation, even the ones meant to be simple. Aside from backer-given codes of course.

The Backers Code can be looked up in the wiki and is always the same.

The contents in the crate can give you a good start but aren't necessary to get the full experience of the game.

For speedrun purposes (except for 1 specific glitch) the Backers crate is not necessary either.

Crate in dry meadow hideout - the code is on the wiki.
Crates in wolf's camp in area 2 - looking them up via notepad from the sav.dat file in c/users/user/appdata/locallow/acid wizard studios/your profile/sav.dat, look for crate1 ( and crate2)_med_wolfman_something, then "digits", and after that is the code.
Crate in village barn ( area 2 ) - one half of the code is in the barn on the ground, the other is near "Pig"s head in the pig shed.
Crate in the swamp village ( chapter 2 ) is on the lottery ticket in the nearby room. Look for 1-digit numbers in the ticket.

I think that's about it?

In every playthrough of this game I do not unlock a single coded crate and still end the game with more guns and ammo than I know what to do with.
