As far as whole area lighting up, not just a small patch of land - that's a shiny stone somewhere in the middle of it. It should also be accompanied by a noise and a lit up area would be flickering a bit.
I always assumed a light indicated some sort of enemy or was just a visual effect, haha.
Yeah I would say it's even too rewarding.
The first time I decided to check out what's crawling through the woods durning the night, was durning my second playthrough, when someone was knocking on my door, at the hideout in the Silent Forest. I said "♥♥♥♥ it" I have a shotgun, whatever it is I'll just oneshot it, so I opened it and the horror aspect of the game kind of started dying for me, there was nobody to be found, just the molotov and some healing pills. So when I heard the voice calling me next night I didn't hesitate to check it. And guess what, a shiny stone as a reward. The game never punishes you for going outside, imagine how much better it would be if one night you'd hear someone calling you, so as always you go outside to recieve your free shiny stone and then BOOM a bunch of chompers jumps out from the woods and you're forced to fight. I'd personally love stuff like this to be added!
Eh... I mean, you're already taking a risk by going out there to get the items. Maybe it would be different if I had a better weapon, but I'm not even going to risk a confrontation with a bunch of enemies when all I have is a board with nails in it. I have a hard enough time with just a single savage.
