How do I reload a pistol?

I have small caliber magazine but dont know how to reload the pistol

Equip the pistol. The default reload button is R, like in many games, but you can set it to something else if you'd like.

If you reload before the clip ends you lose the bullets, right? so it's better to shoot all bullets before reloading. BUT, it's dangerous to walk with just one bullet in the clip...

Unless you're using the powerful one-shot pistol; then it's dangerous to whatever you nail with that one shot.

I know it sounds daft, but it's the wording of things that threw me off. When you empty a pistol it says "It's useless" and I just assumed that meant you needed a new one (plus at this point I was finding more and more spare parts, so I assumed it was to help).

It’s worth mentioning that R only works for reloading if you have disabled the gamepad input option. Put the empty gun in a hotbar space and chose that space and then press R. You should then reload if you have magazin in your inventory.
