True ending explained (SPOILERS)
Some people have seen the true ending and it left them confused. I'll explain everything ITT.

- You, The Doctor, and The Soldier were part of a 3 man incursion into Darkwood, with the goal of destroying the heart of the Being behind all of this
- You get seperated and kidnapped by the doctor later on, having lost his mind, who then steals your key to the Swamp
- You fight your way through Darkwood, to the Swamp, and burn down the tree made of people in front of you
- You take the road home, which is actually the road to the Giant Tree, which houses The Being
- You are entranced by The Being's call, so you strip down and start to doze off

This is where things stop being real.

- In your Apartment dream, you notice the cracks in reality, ending with you waking back up inside the Giant Tree (your Darkzone clothes are nearby)
- You get to the Giant Being and almost succumb to it
- One of your comrades is nearby and holding a flamethrower, but has lost his mind to The Being
- You forcefully take it and destroy the being with fire, but die in the process, finally getting real sleep
- The fire burns most of The Being's forest away, allowing helicopters from the outside world to come in

And that's it, a bittersweet ending. Very well done, Acid Wizard. This is one of my favorite games now.

So tried the ending myself, and instead of staying by the flames, i tried to escape, and across the tree bridge theres a huge swarm of people trying to escape. Burning them results in flames spewing up and engulfing the protaganist which results in you crawling, and to his death.
Part of me feels like, maybe theres something we're missing. Maybe there is a chance for escape, not going to say it is possible, Since it seems like, in Darkwood, everyones ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up and not getting out alive. but i've also noticed shiny stones everywhere.
Since the game is cleary impacted by player choice. maybe there is a way to escape?
:P

Also did this, a few times. You can't get past the bridge. Once you're on that ledge you'll get caught by the flames bursting up from the depths reguardless.
Atleast as far as I've found.

The Doctor is not in "team". He arrived with a team as familiar with the local, but did not know about the plans.

There's a photo you get with you, the trader, and the doctor in military garb.
Can you be more spesific where? I only found a couple of notes by bunker exit and inside the military house.

Helicopter that crashed.

Radio tower also explains it.
Are players supposed to deduce this from the above mentioned photo and the helicopter crash site? Or is this also mentioned somewhere. The notes are only about tree analysis, iirc..

I also didn't think the Doctor was part of the team, wasn't it you, the Trader, and Maciek?
We know Maciek by name and the Trader rescued and "looked after" us.

The doctor mentions he doesn't recognize you when he finds you in the woods, could he really be that messed up he doesn't remember you anymore?

He (doctor) had not been familiar closely with the group.
The protagonist apparently has not quite normal (face).

In the doctor's house in the prologue on the floor drawn the circles - Doc is madman since prologue.

ive been thinking about the opening alot. how its stated people came to the person saying it to try and get cured. there is only one person who that could be and its the doctor. the doc is narrating the opening. meaning that he has been there for a while and is familliar with the village.
if you allow him to live he will stay selfish but also does things to sort off help you out. like how you can trade with him for certain items everytime you encounter him, and its always 100 rep.
the doc is someone who feels guilt for something he doesnt comprehend. or at least thats what i think.

as for the team, i think there were only 3. i might be wrong here but i found the key to the underground 3 times. of wich one was the one the doc took from you.

and you can see the protags face in the talking mirror. he looks horrible, black and charred. kinda like the traders skin.

the real question for me is, why do both the trader and the protag have that black charred skin.

The Doctor has nothing to do with outsiders
The Soldier has nothing to do with Protagonist except being an outsider
Protagonist was a member of a research team (remains of which you find in their camp after radio tower) and had nothing to do with "destroying the heart of The Being"

Did the events before finding the fraud apartment actually happen? You wake up at the being, suggesting it was a dream, but Maceik had the flamethrower with him just like in the dream. Is the dream based on the memories of the person pre being seduction?

At the end when you take your coat off, do you turn into the doctor or is that really the protagonists real life and what he looks like? I know it's not real but if it was, I wonder what made him so messed up looking. Wait when you have those dreams of the Flat and having a wife is that the Protagonists story or the doctors? I was always confused about that

1. Absolutely no need to necro a nearly 2-year-old thread
2. They just look similar when the hat is off, it's coincidence.
He was just asking a question, the thing this forum is made for.
