What is the objective of this game?

I am confused at chapter 1, I collect stuff to craft and fortify the hideout but still I duno what the main objective is or how to progress in the game. People say when night comes, hide in house until morning!! Then what in the morning? I am confused.. pls help :)

Play the story out, the journal is a quest log (with objectives etc).

The hideout is home, just explore out from it in all directions. Visit every location, scavenge entire areas if you want to have a lot of resources.

The more you explore, the more journal entries there will be.

Gameplay-wise, scavenge by day and survive assaults by night. Story-wise, escape the woods. Talking to characters will help you find direction.
