So, I let Piotrek leave the area without buying the cable first. And I've heard elsewhere that you you can just find the cable somewhere in the biome.

I've scoured the Silent Forest. Killed one elk in a corner just to be sure, the other elk I found dead (???), opened all the lockboxes I've seen (I think I've only seen two that require lockpicks, maybe more that I can't remember). I've opened the little shed behind Piotrek's abandoned house. The hostiles near the giant hog met the sharp end of my shovel. I backtracked to the road to the village area and remembered some loot that I didn't have room for the first time I traveled, but still couldn't find the cable. I've looked all around and can't find it anywhere. Oh, and I also found the camp of savages who were guarding two small magazines and other loot items next to the pig shed. Still nothing.

I guess the only thing I haven't tried is this truck that whenever I'm near it, I hear what sounds like a hostile creature (elk?) but I can't really loot the truck, so I don't know.

Someone said that it might be on an NPC, but I don't really want to go on a killing spree, no less on "innocent" people, just to progress this part of the story.

So ... suggestions? Don't really feel like using 10 molotovs or whatever number it takes either, and I want to save my bullets for the Old Woods.

The other one does belong to an NPC.. The wiki has all the answers, but it is spoilers. You could just skip the whole sow side quest.

The noise is a dormant chomper in the back of the truck, you can rouse it by getting in from the rear, be ready for a fight. There is a crate in there too, I cannot remember what items are in it.

I have contacted the local rangers about your elk abuse.

I'm sorry if this is a bit late, but you can get a cable by killing an old lady in the village, who's sitting in a burned house.
She has a crate next to her (which should be empty if you've taken the doll from there).
You don't have to kill the Sow, but if you do, Wolfman will give you a 7th hotbar slot, which will come in handy, and you can loot a few more items from the village after that.

7th hotbar slot? That's pretty neat. Though I currently only have five - so I take it you mean he'll just give you a hotbar slot.

Cool. I'll finish this playthough without killing the sow. And then I'll do the next playthough and kill the sow, making sure to get the cable from Piotrek before he disappears.
