You might only have to clear one section to gain access to your stuff (maybe craft a 2 shot shotgun). You could try and burn the place down (molotovs, gasoline, flares/torches to ignite the gas.. gas bottles would be good).
Health pills are best for poison, keep some in hotbar so you can instantly cure poison and instantly heal HP.
You could kite them by walking backwards and letting them walk on to your jabs (it will take quite a few jabs). Ideally you need an axe or shovel though. When you spot an enemy (before they spot you) just creep up and lob a molotov on them.. saves getting in to a scrappy fight.
You don't have pistol or ammo?
I added a damage upgrade on mine, maybe adding it causes more stamina usage?
I have a pistol, but since I kept dying I lost the ammo for it.
I didn't realize health pills cure poison...
..not only will throwing them burst the corpses it will also light the basement up, then just take the chompers out one at a time (with molotovs & shotty).
Remember you can retreat from the basement at any time to make a save point after you have killed one or two things down there.
The stamina upgrade on the pitchfork does allow you to jab jab jab without getting exhausted (unless you run, then it will drain faster) but really you want an axe by this stage of the game (or get really proficient with timing the swings of a heavy hitting shovel)..
Maybe you picked a negative trait that is draining your stamina more? (I think it is best to avoid things like 'weak lungs' and 'weakness' at all cost, stamina is too important to mess with).
For future reference, if you get the alternative ending to the church dream there will be a different enemy type in the basement for you to face, dogs (feeding on dead chompers)..
..You can burn them while they are feeding (with molotovs) and one pump them with a shotty if they charge you (I'm sure this strat works for chomper basement to).
Just use whatever means necessary, if things get bad down there at least put some damage in before escaping. They stay wounded, you can finish them off when you go back down there.
You can kill chomper even with plank with nails. Taking down a chomper in melee combat is rather difficult, however it's slightly easier with shovel thanks to it's damage and reach. Pitchfork also works, it's got even better reach making securing hits easier, watch out for stamina though.
Easiest way to take down a chomper (imo) is to use sprint to dodge Chomper's attacks, then use quick attack (middle mouse button) while it recovers, repeat until the Chomper dies. Don't use ctrl button, it's worthless and using it can make you take damage, it's pretty useful against Stick Savages though.
Edit: Oh and yeah, that situation in Church basement. If there's a lot of chompers left in there i'd get some molotovs (3-5 should suffice), kite the chompers around and throw molotovs at them, one direct hit with an molotov is enough to kill a Chomper. If you are unable to do that, if you got a pistol but have no ammo for it (perhaps it got dropped in the basement after death) i'd survive 2 nights and get some mags, Wolf also sells some. If you got a gun it's basically ez mode, chompers can't do anything to you as long as you keep shooting them (guns are totally balanced btw)
tldr: I suggest sharpened shovel with max durability upgrade. Hunt for stones with light if need more points.
Moltovs, beartraps, homemade shotgun pointblank also work.
***I learned that with the (sharpened) shovel, startng with a charged swing, you can kill the chomper before it fully transforms by wailing on the corpse and during its transformation. Moltovs are also A+. if you're careful, you can simply kill all of the "sleeping" chompers in the basement.
The shovel with max durability (need another shovel head for upgrade) and +dmg with sharpening is my go to. I find that while the pitchfork's reach is very nice, it cannot be upgraded so you end up dumping so much scrap metal just to fix it over and over. And easy way to get the money for the trader shovel is to walk around with a lanturn or shining your flashlight around since it'll make Shiny Stones glimmer (plus it's good for visability anyway)
You can tell which corpse is a chomper because they will be laying flat and have sort of a black line thorugh their body (head to belly). Anything with mushrooms or curled up down there will just hurt you.
If they're all awake because they woke up and killed you, I would go with MOLTOVS and BEAR TRAPS. Moltovs should usually be good enough to kill an offguard chomper when thrown from a distance but the beartrap should help anything that slips thru.
Homemade shotguns are my go to for chompers I fail to sneak past in the woods. Just need two pipes and tape and it will kill a chomper with a fully aimed pointblank shot.
I woulnd't really suggest the shovel head on, esp in such a small space. They can be killed with melee by dodging by walking+running around them until they charge, then quick hit them right after, but it's tricky.
I don't know if it would work since it's such a small basement, but could try tossing meat in the far corner to bait them away while you sneak past
