Going out at night?
So I'm still pretty new to this game, only day 13 but loving it so far. I spent each of my nights in hidout1 cowering in a cornor in the bedroom while peering through the wall cracks. I was wondering if you can actually go out at night instead of hiding. Can you survive without the protective substance in the hidout? Or does it just help you survive and make the night easier?

You can venture out a little bit, pretty much within the fence-line (the hideout grounds). Just get back indoors if the gore comes looking for you, the gas pushes it away.

It's fun to go outside occasionally, there are some good night events going on outside (and in other rooms within the hideout).

Back in my day, we drank from a bucket to keep our flesh from rotting off at night, then we ran out into the woods to play with eight Black Chompers at once! Kids these days just get to sit in their hideouts, safe from the red mist!

The problem is, with this game is that they tell you to hide intdoors at night, but go outside an exploreif you dare and see thing you wish you had known all along ; ]

No. Red mist will kill you, you can run shortly from it, but not forever. This is why every time you go to new hideout you need to light the oven.

You can walk around the hideout, outside. Hideout 1 teaches you some bad habits I think. It makes you think you are safe if you just sit in a room, because the savages don't really try to break in. You are in for a rude awakening at Hideout 2 and 3 if that becomes your playstyle.
