Finding a pistol in the silent woods?
Is there a place I can reliably find a pistol in the silent woods or should I bite the bullet and buy the crafting materials?

Go ahead and build any gun other than the rifle. Wolfman gives you a free rifle if you choose his path. The gun itself is actually pretty bad, since it can't kill Chompers or Centipedes in one shot, and the enemies it can one-shot tend to be weak enough to just bludgeon with a shovel. It does shine at taking out Human Spiders, though.

Thanks, just finished Piotrek's quest so I have the gun parts now for free. Going to splurge and defend my house with a firearm for once.

the pistol is probably the best chapter 1 weapon.

the pistol is probably the best chapter 1 weapon.

It's the best weapon in the entire game. It aims quickly, is accurate out to medium range if you give it time to zero in, can be spammed at point blank in emergencies, does a decent amount of damage, and ammo for it is relatively cheap and common.

Shotgun can instantly kill almost anything up close, but is a single-shot weapon for the vast majority of the game and ammo for it is fairly uncommon (you can find two shells in the Village and I'm pretty sure that's it, unless maybe there are a couple more in the Hunter House somewhere.) The Hunting Rifle is just awful at virtually everything, and ammo for the Assault Rifle is too rare (and doesn't stack...) to make it a reliable choice of weapon.

Shovel, pistol, and molotovs will carry you through the entire game pretty reliably. If you can't beat it to death with the shovel, shoot it. If you can't shoot it, burn it.

I agree that it used to be the best weapon overall, but pretty far from it in the final release. It takes 5(!) shots to kill a red chomper, and 4 to kill a swamper. With only an 8 round mag, assuming you're not wasting any shots by reloading early, you're probably going to be reloading while fighting just 1 of these enemies more often than not.

While I agree with you guys that the rifle isn't the greatest, it still one shots everything. So great for sniping swampers.

Really the ultimate overall weapon in chapter one is the molotov. You can make them so cheaply so early on, yet they're powerful and materials for them are super abundant.
