Getting mobbed at night (2nd hideout)
I'm on my first play through, made it to the 2nd hideout and have spent a few days securing the place / exploring.
In the first hideout surviving the night wasn't too hard, the layout of the house made it easy to hide and even if you did get seen, they only came one at a time so could be easily fought.
Now I'm finding they make it through whatever barricades I set up and I get mobbed every night by 2+ savages.
Any advice on what I'm doing wrong? I'm really enjoying the days but nights are sucking the fun out of it for me...

Try leaving the lights off and not moving around much, the generator room can be fortified easily, and also try blocking doorways and windows with furniture.

I've tried putting things in front of doors but they just push them out the way?

I found traps help a lot.

I'm on the first playthrough too. Surviving the night in second hideout is pretty tough. To grab some chances, I did this: https://i.imgur.com/7aXWMCG.png When the dark falls, I'm praying so they won't break the barricaded window, decide to smash the doors open or there won't be any visit of some supernatural entity like poltergeist (or what it's called - the thing that moves furniture around).

How this supposed to work (and works half-decently): The row of furniture in the room with workbench is holding the door closed if they will try to get in that way (the couch was originally in generator shed). That door is blocked agains the cooker. In the smaller room, I blocked the door with a closet and blocked it against the wall with the table found around.

having a decent weapon helps tons. try to have a shovel before the second hideout or one very shortly after. You can have a pistol made by the 4th to 6th day if you are diligent enough. that way if you don't feel confident in melee you can just shoot. By the second hideout pistol ammo will become easy to come by.

Elementary - the houses are randomly generated I think, mine definitely doesn't look like that. Still, clearly I haven't been putting enough furniture in front of the doors.

breakn2stuff - Ahh ok, I'm still using an upgraded plank with nails. I've got around 300 trader reputation so getting the shovel won't be hard, but how are you supposed to get the pistol that early? The 3 toolboxes are 200 a piece to upgrade your bench (although I found one at Plantics house, so 2 at a push), then the materials are like 900. How are you getting that by day 4?

Melo - I suggested possible solution, but I think the set of furniture is the same aside from the different layout each time.

As for getting the pistol - I'm at day 16 and just crafted it. Found some firearem parts in the village (as well as the tool box needed to upgrade the workbench), bought the pistol frame from the trader and put it togather. Investment in pistol as soon as possible seems to be a good way as it is really powerful against savages. Defending hidout using it is definitely worth the effort and future gains.

Another tip that might help is to throw bottles around in the area your staying, it makes broken glass which causes damage to everything but you. Also getting the pistol is not hard as you can usully find the parts and if not, then sell stuff you don't use to buy the parts.

You can find both weapon parts/cloth/tool box in the first area if i'm not mistaken. I think i only bought the pistol frame. Plus selling virtually even you get minus the essentials helps a lot too.

Best to be aggressive. Put a lantern on your belt and walk around the house and kill them as they spawn. The Third Eye perk is really helpful if you think there are more than one, and make sure you build the well in case you need an emergency heal.

Replace your spiked board with a staff ASAP, since the extra reach will make dealing with the punchy savages a lot easier. Replace the staff with a shovel, which you should hopefully be able to make shortly after you reach hideout 2 if not before. You'll want to get a second shovel blade so you can use the upgrade that gives it greatly increased durability!

The only enemy you should run from is the banshee (black thing with a red glow around it, you'll see crows flying around before it arrives) since you don't get anything for killing them or their babies.

The best approach is a balanced one; make sure you've got a well-barricaded house, and maybe put a chain or bear trap in front of the window or door that you think is most likely to be broken down. Try to have at least two rooms so you can retreat to reload or heal up. If anyone enters your territory, don't run: stay calm and take them down as quickly as possible. It's never a good idea to run away blindly, outside's always more dangerous than inside.

Some extra advice: if you're going to block a door with furniture, put it on the other side of the door so the enemy can't just push it away. Keep an extra trap in your inventory or hot bar, if you see something breaking down a barricade, put the trap in front of it and prepare to take it down as soon as it breaks in.

Don't know why you would replace the board with the staff. The board charges quickly, barely uses stamina, and still has a mini-stun.

The board is indeed the most reliable weapon. If fully upgraded, it will prove useful even in chapter 2, though the Axe is definetly superior when fighting human spiders or swampers on dry land.

Range is better than speed in most cases. As long as your attack resets their attack, you can just evade and hit them from range and they'll never hit back. Fighting savages and other enemies with lots of fast attacks or with a longer reach is much simpler and safer with a long, slow weapon and you'll be getting a ton of staffs off dead savages anyhow.

Not to mention, boards can only take one upgrade so you're going to have to carry multiples or repair it constantly. An upgraded shovel does a ton of damage and can take a ton of abuse before needing repairs, and sticks are inherently disposable since you'll be getting so many.

I wasn't saying that the board is better than the shovel, but the board is definitely better than the staff. Also, I would argue that speed and stamina is better than range in more than some cases.
