Knock on door but no invitation left

So I'm posting here to just check something. I'm on my second attetmpt with the game (first file was on hard, and I ended up restarting because I was basically out of lives while I was still in chapter 1). In my first game, one night (maybe night 3 or 4?) I heard a knock on the door. I opened it, then freaked out and closed it again. The next morning the invitation was sitting in front of my door. This just happened in my new file, on night two. However, this time I didn't open the door because I had it boarded up. And now there's no invitation. Did I mess this event up? Will I get another chance to get the invite, or am I pretty much screwed?

The knocking event can have multiple outcomes and occur multiple times.
