Silent Protagonist?

According to the Wiki, the Protagonist never speaks:

However, I just began playing the game and the Protagonist speaks in the Prologue. Was this something that changed over time? I noticed that the Wiki entry is pretty old...

The protagonist will occasionally make remarks about his situation but it is not often. It may even be his thoughts

It's a bit ambigious, so far as we know he doesn't actually talk to anyone in a way they understand, though he may think to himself or even think aloud. Might respond to hallucenations.

some NPC's in the game directly adress that he can't talk.

The Protagonist lost his mouth due to the mutation caused by the forest air. That is why they can't speak.

Pretty sure that's just his thoughts that are being shown, not him talking.

it's always been a bit conflicting, at one hand npcs say you can't speak, and that you look like a bloody freak. And at another you can eat a lot of things normally. Pills, bread, mushrooms, hell, even wood, with the special perk, of course. Plus the "scream" perk. Maybe our face only looks mutated shut, just like the split head of the chompers? Maybe we can open it up if we wish?
