Workbench upgrades
Are they global? And do they carry over to Chapter 2?

Just not sure if I need to hold onto all these toolboxes and welders anymore.

Yes, I'm pretty sure my chapter 2 hideout bench was almost maxed out (carried over from chapter one).

..In the same way that upgrading the bench in hideout 1 also upgrades the bench in hideout 2 (in chapter 1).

So like you said you might not need to take those toolboxes with you, the next bench upgrade will likely require a different item, an item that is unique to chapter 2 (such as 'pincers').

I guess I'll just hang onto *a* welder in the event it's just fixed at a lower upgrade level. Guess I can ditch all these toolboxes, though. I must have like 4 or 5 by now.

I've often wondered if perhaps the benches should be separate and unique to each hideout, so the benches at various hideouts would be upgraded at different rates.

I think it would be good for the overal difficulty level if the benches were standalone (rather than auto-upgraded globally)..

..or, it could be a good way of modifying the difficulty level, you could have a setting.. 'global bench upgrade' ON/OFF (perhaps 'off' by default in hard mode)

The inventory managment and crafting in this game is really good, having individual benches for each hideout might improve the system further, it might make the decisions even more interesting..

..You would have to plan more and perhaps transport stuff between hideouts more, it might take a bit longer to fully prepare your next hideout if it didn't inherit the bench level from your last hideout..

(The bench in the chapter 2 hideout wouldn't have to start from scratch though, it could be partially upgraded already when you get there).

...the items required to fully upgrade every bench (in chapter 1) probably exists, and choosing to slowly upgrade them all (individually) would probably extend the length of chapter one.

I'm pretty sure in older versions, the upgrades were not global. To be honest, the less inventory management and busywork, the better. It's the weakest part of the game. I kind of wish the workbench had unlimited storage so I could just shove everything into it and move on. Or at least an auto-sort function.

i remember the days when the workbench wasnt a thing... a you could craft everything on your hand.
