Digging in the underground entrance

I've noticed that upon entering the Underground Entrance for the first time, there is an option to use a shovel and dig if you head to the right. However, very soon afterwards, roots will grow in and cover this area, preventing you from being able to dig. Has anyone been able to get a shovel early enough to be able to dig in this area?

Yeah. There was a thread about this a little while ago. I'll see if I can dig it up.

It's not root grow, when you visit the vault door, an earth quake occurs while you turn back to surface and that makes the entrance blocked. so don't visit vault door before you meet doctor.

So my answer is : When you dig that area, you get a nice weapon and bullets.

As of Alpha 10, you would get not weapon, but weapon parts enough to craft pump-action shotgun

I went there for the first time with a shovel ( first time to enter) there tunel was already collapsed. :(
