Now I just need to prove it. I know I need something called a "grey symbol" that's shaped like a hammer, but I have no idea where it is. Can somebody please help?

No, because you can Get the Bird to bring a bone from above the crates, on the same mine entrance screen.

Try looking around the vampire village during different times of the day. (There are two locations there where you can find garlic, but one is a red herring!)

This is what I thought as well. But then I tried again and on the left of the mine entrance screen is the pendant you need, I tried clicking it before but he shrugged his shoulders. Click slightly above the pendant to pick it up, the clickbox is off and it trys to click the mounds of dirt beneath it.
