I'm not overly certain how Tree Hugger works specifically - I understand it's sorta a once-per-in-game-day thing, but if you're doing it after sleeping, maybe the game likes you to travel around for a bit before it'll progress. If the tree's smile isn't moving, try completing another segment of the game for a day and come back to it, perhaps.
It's possible it could be a bit glitchy though, as other players seem to have trouble with treehugging too - you might have attempt it a new game, just to see if something might've gone awry on the the previous save.
For me, I hugged the tree a few times throughout the game just because it was so huggable - then at the end I realised there was an achievement for it.
My steps:
Hug tree.
Go back to tent, sleep til night, immediately sleep til day.
Go hug tree.
Repeat.
I had to repeat this about 4-5 times before the tree cracked a big grin.
If it's working, the mouth on the tree will move into a bit more of a smile every time.
