You're suggesting they just...Remove the ability to sprint altogether? I, uh... Why? What would that possibly accomplish?
Because it doesn't make the gameplay any different, the difference in speed is not that big, and the game is not designed around it (making the feature really useful in the core of the gameplay). It's really an unnecessary gimmick.
Even if it weren't benefitial to players..I don't see how it needs to be axed entirely. I mean if it is extra and most people never see it...lets totally get rid of something that took a little time to code and that other players still like...yeah no.
Even if it didn't do any of those things, it's still a simple matter of convenience. The ability to move faster isn't a "gimmick". It's a basic element of gameplay. If we removed everything that wasn't 100% essential to the game, then...Well, among other things, the levels would look pretty boring, since environment design is just a gimmick.
Colors are a gimmick too...as is having more than one bro..all characters should be black and white stick men. Having a macho bro theme is a gimmick. Game needs to be a generic 2d shooter.
Yeah tell me the last time you have used it in a online co-op game. (Except for the very rare situation that everything was destroyed and you had to jump a very big gap) As I've said it's a feature that is not incorporated into the core of the gameplay, otherwise people would discover it and need it for overcoming the obstacles, like in a true platformer. And even if it were useful, its mechanic of double tapping should be changed to a dedicated key for example "Left Shift", for it to be more easy to use (and more useful that way) and for it to be "discovered" by the player.
I constantly hold the sprint button (which is a thing when using the controller) down when moving, because there's almost never a reason not to. It makes you move faster. Whether it's necessary or not, it's convenient being able to cover more ground in less time.
Even on hard and in Hell? I 'd assume either you like dying 90% of the time to a random bullet or you like leaving your teammates behind searching for you, or making the game more difficult for them because you are dead... Also, that's why I've said it needs to be bound to a single key, it's a separate button in the controller, so it must be on a keyboard. Double tapping the whole time is annoying and tiresome for the long run.
I won't even comment on that until you realize by yourself how wrong you are...
