Mahjong is heavily luck based. A bad and inexperienced player will still win against a pro a reasonable amount of times.
Sure, on average the pro will win more, but if you're just facing them in a single East Wind table it might make next to no difference.
Similarly, many of the people you think are smurfing might just be people that got lucky in that match.
Its a gambling game. They are not good players.
Majsoul specifically is a godtier f2p game, because you can download it and play it with 0 requirements to spend money at any point.
A 7k point gap to third is very much possible to make a comeback. Assuming you're nondealer (if you are dealer, the path to victory is even easier), all you need is 3900 direct hit ron, 5200 tsumo if they're dealer, 6400 tsumo if nondealer, or 7700 on anyone else. In fact this is a scenario worth practicing how to aim for value when you need it most. Being behind in South 3/4 is a position you will find yourself in often, learn what to do here!
The rewards might be smaller on lower ranks but you don't save time. You can't quit and start a new game right away. You'll get into the previous game if you jump back in. If they go for quick wins once they have a decent lead, that's smart play from their side. Same if you're in third and know it will be really hard to catch up. Intentionally winning on small hands to end the game is a smart idea too. If you're in fourth, you should at least try to get third before ending it.
Indeed. I found a log of mine where I had 800 points by the start of east 3. By the end of the game, I finished second with 28800. I kept east 3 going for 7 repeats.
Next round I tsumo Haneman'd, and then got 4 repeats on my dealer round, bankrupting someone and ending with me in 1st place above someone who had ~35k points the entire game.
The only habit you're going to build by leaving, even in bronze, is giving up.
