Push or fold against a Riichi
I'm seeing a trend in my bracket that the first player who called Riichi would have a bad hand, leading to the second player going for a pursuit Riichi, and the third with a hidden tenpai. And it's getting more confusing since those players would also not declare a Riichi if they're at a tenpai with 5000 points or more.

Should I keep pushing if someone called Riichi before the 12th turn?

Normally, no. Once someone has declared riichi it's not worth it to pursue your hand anymore. However, there are exceptions. If you are tenpai yourself and have a two sided wait, it's not a bad idea to keep pushing your hand even against riichi. If you are one away (iishanten) with good value, you can get away with pushing some moderately dangerous tiles provided it's not too late. If you are two away (ryanshanten) that's almost always a fold. If others in your bracket are pushing when their hands aren't even close to being completed, then they will deal in quite often trying to complete them. This is, in my opinion, the hardest aspect of this game so don't be afraid to fold in the face of riichi and push when you're in tenpai. It's an oversimplification but it's a start.

Thank you for the advice. It was very easy to understand.
The rule of thumb I first learned:

  • Tenpai
  • Good wait
  • Good value

If you meet 2 out of 3, you can push. If not, fold.

This is of course a simplification, you may sometimes want to consider additional factors like current scores and round, how dangerous the tiles you'd have to push are, a lack of safe tiles to fold with, potential to mawashi (half-fold) and pivot back into tenpai, etc.
