In the early days of Tenhou.net, their rating system worked more similarly to real tournament play, but ragequitting became too common. So they changed the point spread to heavily punish 4th while letting 3rd off with a slap on the wrist, hoping players would stay and fight for 3rd.
Then MajSoul came along and just copied everything Tenhou was doing. And now Last Place Avoidance™ is its own meta.
Ragequitting is a good way to lose a lot of rank, which means you'll almost never see it in Gold or Jade.
Only seen it twice in Gold, with one time happening after somebody got hit by 5200 Ron and ending with less than 10k difference from 3rd and still half a game ahead in 4 player south; so stupid it might have been just a coincidental disconnect.
Looks like someone didn't get enough sleep, 8 hours of sleep is highly recommended before a game of mahjong.
