wait, what? People run out of copper?
But like others have said: each rank is a big jump in difficulty increase.

If you struggle in Copper you will be outshined in Silver
Silver is a lot harsher and there are tons of decent players in there.
You can easily lose all the progress you made the past few games if you hand someone a great hand and they capitalize on it. It's quite common to see beginners end with negative scores in silver lobbies (which is an insane punishment when it comes to your rank).

Gold is somehow a weird place. On one hand I found it easier, because people have become more consistent in their gameplay, but take way less risks. But well, gotta get out of there myself before I judge it.

I understand it: getting to silver means the game opens up a bunch. If you need help, just post some log for others to review it.

Yes, if you play in Jade Rooms the amount of copper you lose per game while getting 3rd/4th place is insane. That's why you can often see people who are Masters playing in Gold Rooms because they run out of copper and they don't want to spend real money on buying more copper.

The amount of copper you get from dailies far outweighs that. I've never had to worry about it. I used to be sitting on far more than I knew what to do with, then I started spending it all simply in order to get low enough to claim the daily refresh - 18k if you're Master Rank.

Copper doesn't matter. At all. Running out is not something you will ever have to worry about.

Google 'riichi book 1 daina chiba.' It has all the basic strategy you need to reach Master rank.

The #1 tip is just not to deal in. When someone riichi's, immediately fold unless you have a monster hand worth risking it.

Just leaving this here... If you want a shortcut to get out of bronze don't call Kan "EVER", don't chii, or pon unless it gets you to tenpai and don't go for big hands.

If you want a shortcut to get out of silver just spam Honitsu
1.2M | Missingno. 6 SEP 2024 a las 19:23
I really don't like forcing Honitsu too much. I take it the idea is that Silver Room players don't fold ever so you're more likely to get away with it there, but I think it's better to teach players good habits right away than let them fall into bad ones.
PRiSMA 6 SEP 2024 a las 20:13
Then just teach them the 5 block theory asap - but pretty sure no bronze or silver has the patience or will to learn that before the reach gold

Also.

What is this furiten thing...? It's written in red. Must be worth a lot of points

If you're looking for easy games, my win rate went from 50%+ (in bronze) to 25%~ the moment I hit Adept and started going to Silver rooms.

Believe me, if you can't survive in bronze, Silver is going to crush you.

As someone who has played a lot of Riichi Mahjong before and recently dowloaded Mahjong Soul, I feel like a lot of the "weirdness" of bronze is that Players are occasionally so new that you simply cannot predict their actions.

Like, the amount of times, someone won with a hell wait for a terminal or non-live honor is just... astounding. And then there are those who don't realize that you need a yaku and call 4 times, with Shuntsu, terminals and simples mixed and end up with a naked wait without any yaku.

However, arguably the worst part about this, is that Kuitan is always allowed and most ranked matches are Tonpuusen instead of a hanchan. This just leads to everyone going for extremely fast but cheap hands, which means tile efficiency and acceptance are a lot less relevant.
Nine 9 SEP 2024 a las 7:43
Well, if you queue for South you get hanchan, the problem is, almost nobody in bronze queues for that since people in bronze just really want to get out of bronze as quickly as possible because you don't start earning anything until silver.

I really don't understand their decision to lock earning anything to silver+, I don't see why bronze players shouldn't be allowed to earn chests and bond for playing. I'm silver now so it's not like i'm only saying this due to not being allowed to earn anything. it's just a questionable decision and it distorts how people in bronze play the game. There's a lot of stress and anxiety playing in bronze because of the desperation of wanting to get out of it and be able to start finally earning things, once you get out of bronze all of hte pressure and stress is gone, even if you get 4th, so what? You can't demote in silver and you still gain progress towards chests even in 4th. Only then can you finally start playing and enjoying the game.

It sounds to me like you're more focused on grinding currency than actually playing mahjong. "Only then can you finally start playing and enjoying the game" sounds like you're saying you don't even enjoy the game without currency. Did you not actually enjoy playing mahjong back in bronze?

Remember that none of this even does anything, you don't get an in-game advantage for having more copper, it's just psychological tactics game devs use to extract money from you. And I know it can be hard not to fall for, they wouldn't do it if it wasn't so effective, but be careful not to let Skinner Boxes control your playing habits.

I don't see why does grinding appeal to you so much in a mahjong game. You get more gifts, therefore bond points from a single event than from months' worth of grinding, it's literally not worth it. And you'd see me dead before I buy anything in the coin shop, the prices are crazy for what they're offering.

And anyway, your argument about the devs' decision to gatekeep rewards falls apart when you factor in special ruleset rooms (Tournaments section) where you do get those chests and bond points before getting to silver.

Search for "UmaiKeiki's defense guide -- Betaori and Suji" and check the betaori section. You'll be surprised how far you can go just by not dealing into somebody's hand. Utilizing Betaori doesn't require more than knowing the basics of the game rules, too.

Just reached Adept in 16 games - only played South 4P, but that's my own the preference. And this is my first time ever touching online mahjong (or Mahjong Soul), before that I only played some other mahjong games against a CPU.

You can do it too.
