Complete Guide to Getting FS2 Open to run Via steam!

So apparently the Steam version of Freespace is busted and doesn't work at all, so here's the steps to getting everything up and running.

1. Download Freespace 2 via Steam
2. Go to http://www.fsoinstaller.com/ and download the installer, run it in the Steam\SteamApps\common\Freespace 2 directory.
3. In Steam\SteamApps\common\Freespace 2 rename the file 'FS2.exe' something else, then rename the file 'Launcher' 'FS2'
(Some people have found the 'FS2' file doesn't work, if thats the case, follow the same steps just using the 'Freespace2' file.)
4. Now boot from Steam, the Launcher should boot up. In the top right click browse and direct to the file 'fs2_open_3_7_2_RC3.exe'
5. Click apply.

Now you can run the game as normal, however if you want the upgrade textures and Mods read below.

6. On the launcher click the MOD tab, select the MediaVPs 3.6.12 folder (This is the upgrade textures).
7. Click run, simple.

Now finally for multiplayer!

8. Go to http://fs2netd.game-warden.com/ and register.
9. In the launcher, go to Network, select 'LAN/Direct Connection' and 'T1, ADSL, T3, ect'
10. Launch the game, and select a multiplayer character.
11. Press F2 to bring up options, then click the multi tab.
12. Tick the PXO button in the bottom left, then enter the username and password you used on fs2netd.
13. Click accept and open the center hangar door.

I followed these steps exactly. Everytime I direct the launcher to 'fs2_open_3_7_2_RC3.exe' I get an error message that says the launcher has stopped working and it crashes. The problem has persisted through a brand new install of Freespace 2 and the FS2Open mod. Not sure what is going on, can't seem to find any instances where others are sharing in the same problem.

You need to have Java installed in your computer in order to run the FSO installer.

I got all the steps besides 4, when I launch the launcher, it'll show the screen, but I don't know where to select fs2_open_3_7_2_RC3.exe

On the top right of the launcher, click browse, then go to Steam\SteamApps\common\Freespace 2 and select fs2_open_3_7_2_RC3.exe

Real way to get Steam version of FS2 to run:

you should remember that this doesnt works for everyone

i can get fs2 running by downloading the launcher and fs open but the graphics are the 98 ones and the extra campaigns arent in the campaign room. iv got 3.7.2. can someone help

In the launcher did you go to the mod tab and select the mediavp folder?

Additionally FSOpenMediaVPs is a different mod than the fpopen I believe

how do you run the fso installer. i downloaded it and it was only 6mb and contains 3 text files and 4 folders with no exe files or anything to run?

You need Java[www.java.com] to run a .jar archive.

HAZAA!!! it works. thanks. sorry to be awkward but there are black borders on the left and right edges. iv tried changing resolution but the borders remain. any ideas?

hmm. the actual gameplay is full screen but the main menu where you select options, campaign, tech room and the briefings have borders
