Freespace 2

Freespace 2

Another Steam rip off
Why would a company knowingly sell you a lemon? Actually quite a few lemons...Well steam?

What Lou the Lou is saying (in layman's terms) is that Steam does things differently than the modders at HLP have gotten used to doing things, and the difference can throw a little wrench in things. Normally, the recommendation is to install Freespace 2 in C:/Games. With Steam, that's not always possible or practical. Until recently, having Freespace 2 in a long pathname (like the steam directory) wouldn't work. After Steam released FS2, the guys on the code project put in some serious time to get it working with the new, longer pathnames.

What this all means is that the 'default' install folder isn't going to match what you've got. Lou has a pretty good handle on where it'll be if you just click through all the steam prompts on where to install things. Once you install things there, you should be able to run the launcher, select your build (really easy), select your mod (just as easy, slightly less obvious), and get playing.

Trying now. Seems to be installing. Lots of status bars here though.
Excellent, that's what it's supposed to do. It will take a little while, depending on your connection speed. When Next is clickable, it is done.

When it's done, I'll help you get it running.

OK. It has told me "all mods installed successfully". Gonna attempt to light this candle again.

Ummm... what's your connection speed? Because it has a few gigs to download...

But ok, if it's downloaded, don't just run the game from Steam. You have to use the launcher.

1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Freespace 2
3. Find launcher.exe, right-click on it*
4. Click Send to Desktop (shortcut)*
5. Run that*
6. Click Browse in the upper right
7. Double-click fs2_open_3_7_2_RC3.exe
8. Click the Mod tab
9. Click Select Mod
10. Click MediaVPs_2014, click OK
11. Click Run
12. Play FreeSpace 2

**** ALTERNATE DIRECTIONS - Allows tracking FSO time played through Steam ****
3. Find freespace2.exe; rename it to: freespace2-old.exe
4. Find launcher.exe; rename it to: freespace2.exe
5. Click Play in Steam Library under FreeSpace 2

No dice. :( Same message. "Cannot be played from a root directory."
Now that you've done that, find the launcher. It will be in that folder you just installed things to, and it will be called pretty simply the "Launcher" with maybe a couple numbers on the end. Run that. Once the window pops up, go to the top of the launcher and hit "Browse". Look for a file that says "fs2_open_3_7_x.exe" where "x" could be 0, 2, or what's called an "RC". Make sure you pick one that says "fs2" and not "fred", and definitely avoid any that say "Debug" on the end for now. Then, look at the tabs on the launcher and hit "MOD". Pick the one called "mediavps_xxxx" (You could have either 3612 or 2014. 2014 is newer) and hit "okay". Go to the "video" tab and adjust your resolution to something kickass.

Hit Run. Enjoy.
Totally ninja'd. His is easier to read. Listen to it.

7. Double-click fs2_open_3_7_0.exe
3.7.0 is not compatible with the 2014 MediaVPs, and doesn't have the long pathname fix.

You should use fs2_open_3_7_2_RC3.exe instead.

Thanks, my bad. Edited.

I cannot find a launcher.exe. It's telling me that I must configure my system in the Launcher before running FS2. Any clue what that means?

If you have the FSO/SCP files properly installed, your launcher.exe file is in:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Freespace 2

Trying to run FreeSpace 2/FSO without using the launcher is not something I'd recommend.

My location is correct but no launcher.exe in the list. Delete and attempt reinstall?

You could try that, yes. When you go through the SCP install process, make sure all the lights are green and that you can click Next before you exit the program.

Also, make sure you manually delete the FreeSpace 2 folder from your steamapps folder for a clean install, if Steam doesn't remove it (it may not because of "manually" (SCP) added files).

Take your totally pointless, non-constructive BS somewhere else, please. You're not helping in any way, shape, or form.
