1-step way to get it working without FSO or anything else. ==> manually apply Interplay's patch

or

Get FS2 Running on a Modern System in TWO Easy Steps ==> install Freespace Open + HD mod + other mods

FSO IS not the right answer. The Steam version CAN work. They just didn't know to tell the buyers what to do.

In order for the game to run on your computer, do the following.

A) Go to the directory that the game was installed in
B) Go to the 'data' folder
C) DOUBLE click on the file 'FS2.reg'
D) Click 'Yes' When asked if you want 'Registry Editor' to make a system change
E) Click 'Yes' When Registry Editor asks if you are sure you want that change
F) Click 'OK' when Reg Edit says it's done
G) Run the game and enjoy

FSO is not a wrong answer, either. That's why the OP kinked to both methods, with an "or" between them. Use the first one to play the game the way it was designed, or use the second to play it the way it can be played as well as literally opening new worlds of gameplay.

FSO is totally the right answer, unless you wanting to preserve the spirit of the original, or you're terrified of change.

Graphics updates are nice, but it can lose the nostalgia for some.

Good thing FSO can run without any graphics updates, and even at 640x480 if you want.

Must like slamming his hand in a door, too. :)

I have tried every option listed here and I still can't get it to run. I can't use my C: drive because it's an SSD with my OS (Win 8.1) on it. Any other hints? How can I get a refund?
Itharus Aug 28, 2014 @ 9:42pm
This game will work on win 8.1, and an SSD shouldn't have any impact. If you're installing in a directory other than C, that shouldn't matter. If you've done the fs2.reg thing, and it's still not working... I dunno. Contact steam's technical support at that point because you shouldn't be having any problems.

Thanks, I'm going to uninstall it and chalk this one up to just donating $$$ to Steam. I'm glad I got it on sale.

What exactly is the problem? If you can give us more details we might be able to help you.

When I launch the game here's what happens..
I'll get the freespace2 emblem in the windows taskbar.
I'll then get a message (in the middle of the desktop) that "Freespace 2 has stopped working"
"Windows will let you know when there is a fix to this problem."
MageKing17 Aug 30, 2014 @ 8:29pm
Have you tried running FSO?
Strychnine Aug 30, 2014 @ 9:01pm
Absolutely. It was the first thing I tried. I wanted to see it with all of the bells and whistles. When that didn't work, I uninstalled it through Steam, re-downloaded it and tried it vanilla (through Steam). No joy.

I tried the regedit suggestion and I got as far as "Freespace 2 has stopped working..." Thanks for the help everyone, I'm going to move on to a different game...
