Help with FS Open
My apologies if I am being thick, but I haven't played the game properly before, and on multiple occasions I have tried and failed to get started.

I have installed the game, and used the freespace open installer in the directory. This doesn't add a launcher apart from the wxlauncher, which doesn't recognise the directory as having FSO. The FS2.exe launcher requires the other launcher to have been started to setup the game, and regardless of whether I have already done so, this launcher says I need to select a graphics driver (or something along those lines).

Could someone with experience point out what I am doing wrong, or reference an up to date guide?

A side note, when I first installed it without trying FSO it worked for a few minutes, but it constantly registered full lock on the rudder axis of my joystick, a problem which no other flight sim has had for me. Does anyone know what causes this?

Thanks for reading. I appreciate any help you can offer me.

The FSO Installer puts a wxLauncher installer (yes, it should be more convenient) into your FS2 main folder. You then proceed to install wxLauncher which can be installed to any folder you like. One that is done you start wxlauncher and select the FSO exe file in the "Basic Settings" tab in the wxLauncher main window, e.g. "fs2_open_3_8_0_x64_SSE2.exe". You should now be able to setup your game and play.

Thanks for the prompt answer, I have reinstalled and used the FSO installed again. In the WXLauncher basic settings, it says "Folder 'Freespace 2' does not have any supported executables". The only .exes in the Freespace 2 folder are FRED2, FreeSpace2, FS2 and unins000. Is the jar on fsoinstaller.com broken at the moment?

You might want to consider the Knossos installer/launcher instead. https://fsnebula.org/knossos/stable/Knossos.exe

The old fsoinstaller is actually not the recommended way to install FreeSpace open anymore--the links on all the websites need to be updated. The hot new way to do this is Knossos, a hybrid launcher/installer program, which you can get at this link: https://fsnebula.org/knossos/

It basically works like Steam does--just tell it where your FS2 main folder is, and where you want it to store all the mods (including FS open) and then you can just select the things you want to install from the explore tab--Knossos will do all the hard work for you. It's also got all the same customization options as wxLauncher does, and will let you know when there's an update for a mod (or FS Open) and give you the option to download it.

I can't guarantee that this will solve your problem, but "use Knossos" tends to solve a lot of installation-related issues.

I have downloaded Knossos, to launch FSO is it necessary to open Knossos each time and select retail FS2?

Knossos is also a launcher as well as an installer. You only should select retail FS2 if you want to play on the retail version of the game with retail assets. If you want to play a mod, you should select the mod you want. If you want to just play the retail campaign with the upgraded assets, you should select the Mediavps mod.
