That is the out of the box max resolution for this 20 year old game.

However, if you install Freespace Open (FSO) you can not only play with whatever resolution you want (1080, 4k, ultra widescreen, multi-monitor), you can also take advantage of graphics updated and tons of mods. The Knossos installer/launcher/mod manager makes it easy.

The folks over at hard-light are very welcoming of new players, and are super helpful. If you run into issues or have more questions you can reach out on their forums and/or discord.
