Knossos is more portable and more reliable than the FSO launcher. The problem is that if you have Linux Ubuntu? the Knossos thing doesn't install as of right now due to a 404 launch pad error.

Knossos can install whatever you want and whenever you want it, it can launch your mods without much issue rather than going into the launcher to make those changes yourself. its just a lot easier to use and not half as messy on the settings.

all you need is a fresh install of the game, get Knossos, let it download all you need after you set the correct paths and so on in the settings, then install what you want afterwards. setup can't be more simple than this.

FSPort + STR and BP complete is enough to have the ideal experience. you can play the first war and the initial aftermath campaign and then go to BP complete and play FS2 blue, then AoA and then WiH.

HLP community have dropped the game version from 3.8.x.x and went for 19.x.x instead for version numbering as well. so that simplifies the process a bit.

if anyone is interested there are other good mods out there including BTA, B5 (Which has recently and finally been updated at long last), JAD and ASW in between others along the way.

Yes, Knossos is much easier to install. For most people it is the ideal solution.
But it is not portable. Knossos keeps all the mod files completely seperate from the game and only really works when used via the Knossos GUI.

The idea for my guide is to have a completely portable installation you can optionally put on a USB device and just plug into any machine. In adition it integrates well into launchers like Launchbox.
