Then double-clicked on the file FS2, and clicked "OK" a couple of times until I got the message that FS2 had been added to the registry. Then I was able to start and play the game without issues.

I bought the FS2 game on GOG.
Ran fine, then I found Knossos. It is all it is said to be, works great for me in Win 10 - 64.
In 1998 I had bought the FS1 gave but gave up on it when the op sys bypassed the idea of backwards compatibility. Abandoned DOS, though it was a stolen cash cow.
Knossos is valid and gave me not just FS1 but other mods I enjoy. And ports of stand alone games.
Good that some folks have worked long and hard for little gain to keep Freespace 2 alive.
Really reminds me of the folks from Germany that a made FREE 'windoze' front end for Descent 1 and 2. My eternal gratitude to y'all.
Interplay may have died but the spirit of 'by gamers for gamers' never died.
Good games have way of living on past imagined expiration date by Microsoft domination.

you don't actually even need freespace 2 to play it.
