Play FreeSpace on a modern computer

How do I get FreeSpace to work on a modern computer with window 10? I've tried reading other posts but I can't seem to get it to work. Maybe I am missing an unspoken step in the process. I am not very computer savvy. I just want to play a beloved game from my childhood again.

I tried to follow kschang77's directions but when i open wxlauncher and try to get the game to work I can't. I've troubleshot to the extent of my ability (find root source of FreeSpace 2, select mod) but can't get the game to run. Am I missing a step?

It did work with previous updates, but something changed in one of the Windows updates and it stopped working. When you run the game, it changes resolution and freezes Windows, so you need to reset the computer. So in a few words, it DOES NOT work on Windows 10.

I have found many hacks to run old games, but not this one. I will keep trying to find new ways, but no success at this point.

I tried another trick, to see if the game had a "wait list" problem. It does. Normally when that happens, killing certain processes in the wait list would allow the game to move forward, but in this case, it crashes to desktop. So we are screwed unless Steam support fixes the issue.

Answer was pretty easy:
1) Buy Freespace 2 (even if you want to play Freespace 1)
2) Install https://fsnebula.org/knossos/ on top (Fan group that is pathing the game for decades now)
3) When installed, just download "FreeSpace port" mod, which is exactly what you are looking for - good old Freespace 1, which is running on Windows 10 ;)

You're a life saver! Worked like a charm, and it also allowed me to install a few mods to upgrade the graphics! It's so great to see that people are still passionate enough about this game make mods to allow it to be played all these years later.

Oh, I didn't realize that FS1 is also for sale on Steam, so that leads to another classic sh-tfit of clueless dipsh-t users who can't google anything and just complain in circles.

I love how the guy made a 12 part video series on youtube with 0 views on how to do it the way without installing freespace open. Classic. Then new users enter the thread and ignore the actual solution and just complain they need help.

In the future I'm going to write a book or something as to the extremely explicit weirdness that FS1 and FS2 are in terms of it seems like there's mass amounts of users who played both around 1998, 1999, forgot about the game for 20 years, then refuse to use literally one of the greatest open source projects made for any game ever.

After you install Knossos and fallow the instructions you will find the "FreeSpace Port" mod in the Explore tab in Knossos, click download and it will show in the Play tab after finishing downloading.

The majority of games work better when they are new. Freespace is not new.
