Tips to get D3 working on modern systems
1. When starting the game and going through the initial setup, click on the Video tab to bring up a device selection. Check OpenGL and uncheck Direct3D and 3Dfx Glide, then click the Scan for the Selected Video Devices button. Performing this step will allow the settings from your video card's control panel to be applied in-game.

2. Click on the Speed tab. Click on the drop down tab and select Very High. Auto-detect doesn't work right on modern systems.

3. If you plan on playing multiplayer games, make sure to update your network settings on the Network tab.

4. When you are done click OK and then you can launch the game with the Play button.

NOTE: If you get an OpenGL warning, ignore it. Modern video cards are much more compatible with OpenGL than when D3 originally came out.

---------------------------------------

Addendum:

By default, resolution options will be limited. There's also a very restrictive FPS cap. You can fix these issues with command line switches.

-framecap <fps> Caps the framerate to the FPS specified. The default, oddly, is 50 FPS! Go ahead and set this to 999 if you don't want a cap.

-width <width> Sets the screen resolution to the specified width, if possible.

-height <height> Sets the screen resolution to the specified height, if possible.

-aspect <value> Specifies the screen aspect ratio for widescreen displays. 16:9 displays, such as 1920x1080, should use a value of 1.78.

-vsync Turns on vertical sync to prevent screen tearing.

The protection error is due to not haven the reg keys put into to the registry, the gog version works ok, but they have set these keys.

Steam if you don't know what you'r doing don't do it or ask gog for help, or simple use there version as you have done for other games to:

" is due to not haven the reg keys put into to the registry"

Really, i must do something wrong then. I had copy simply over the directory to new / other pc and it worked all the time.
Be sure to have all "updates" in place.

Hertahuepf,

You put it on the first hd i guess ?

Your c: drive, then the game don't need the reg settings, it always goes for the i'm installed on the c: driver and if i don't have reg keys when installed on the d: drive then i crash, because i don't now where to find the game.

The gog version creates these settings and it runs on every drive then, even without the patches.

The update won't change anything in the steam version, it will keep crashing.

really not working for me have even pu 1.5 patch over it.

But this is the gog version i think because the steam version always wants a map created steam with two directorys in it.

The gog version creates the steam keys. So no problems

The only thing that worked for me to get the steam version running was putting it on my c: partition.

Found a new way to make descent III steam version work.

From the steam client make a new installation dir: steam -> options -> downloads first option and klik on the bar to open the window to create a new install map

For me i took the f: drive because steam is there now click on drive letter and then select new map under f:\ there will be a folder SteamLibrary this is the one you must choose to install descent 3 too.

Descent 3 will now run like it should run; the depth of the original steam folders is to deep.

Anyone got this to work on a Windows 10 system? I dont think it is possible
When I do all the op's suggested settings I still get an error saying

OGL: SetDisplayMode Failed'
A: You will want to set your display to 16-bit color depth (65,536 colors)

I googled this and found an FAQ from interplay

which then says:

I am recieving an error- 'OGL: SetDisplayMode Failed'
A: You will want to set your display to 16-bit color depth (65,536 colors), not 24-bit or 32-bit, before you run the game. (This happens with some OpenGL 3D cards.)

Once again googled how to change this on windows 10 and found windows 10 does not support 16 colours:

Works fine in Windows 10 for me. Make sure you've selected a 3DFX/Glide graphics card and that nglide is installed and configured (it should've been installed with the game, at least the GOG version comes with nglide, and as far as I can tell, the Steam version is identical).
Drekko 21 AGO 2016 a las 12:58 a. m.
Hey thank you fisk0
I have been able to find the steam or GOG version which I really want to buy. So i bet nglide is the issue I dont remember installing it
