Will it run in Linux?

Steam on Ubuntu 18.04 - will it work? I'd hate to throw money down the drain.

Sidequest: I've also dusted off my Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro joystick and would like to get it working as well. Any ideas/tips?

There was a Linux version out there. But it lagged behind on features from the Windows version. That and the Linux version would need to be recompiled to remove dependancies of old software.
That, and Steam doesn't contain the executables for the Linux version.
Your best bet is to try to get it to work with Proton.

It works fine in WINE. I've successfully got it running on Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Peppermint OS. You can use nglide 3DFX wrapper, or OpenGL. There is a series of command lines you can use to improve your odds of launching successfully, such as: -launched -opengl -usesmoothing -nomultitexture -himem -hividmem -subpixelcorrect -nocompress -nointro -nooutragelogo -nosparkles -nomotionblur -z32bit -directinput -framecap 60

You can also set widescreen resolution with these additional switches, for example: -width 1920 -height 1080

Descent 3 runs better on WINE than most modern Windows systems, you can even put it into a windowed environment.

Edit: There is a native Linux build of D3, but it's very outdated. I managed to get it running but it lacks support for widescreen resolutions.

Works, but controller sucks. Talking about XBox 360 controller. It's quite nicely done in Overload, the Descent successor.

The linux version crashes when I try to restore a game from a save. I don't know how to solve that. Any ideas, friends?

Unfortunately I have exactly the same problem. Every time I restore a saved game it crashes.

@pabouk seems to be a known bug which makes it unplayable on linux. I just wish they would state that this is a beta version in the download page. I am also having issues with controller configuration.

Joinning the club: when finished loading a save file, it exits the game. So is really unplayable. But it runs nicelly, don't know why they didn't fix this issue yet...

What version of Linux are you guys running? I have the same problem running in Manjaro Gnome but was wondering if the bug would be the same in xfce. I've noticed that wine and its forks can be finicky depending on desktop env.

I'm running Mint 20 Cinnamon, but I don't think will depend so much of the environment in this case. It saves the fale, than load and crashes... it seems to me the file library to blame, might not saving right or not loading right. The game itself never crashed with me.

proton with the windows version patched via the patch on the fan site. Patching it takes running the patcher with the version of proton you will use, it's a full thing like installing mods with the proton version for other games. You can get it working, but it will take a while of figuring out how.

The same here, xubuntu 21.10, cannot load the game, that is loading works, but after that, the game just exists.
