That, and Steam doesn't contain the executables for the Linux version.
Your best bet is to try to get it to work with Proton.
You can also set widescreen resolution with these additional switches, for example: -width 1920 -height 1080
Descent 3 runs better on WINE than most modern Windows systems, you can even put it into a windowed environment.
Edit: There is a native Linux build of D3, but it's very outdated. I managed to get it running but it lacks support for widescreen resolutions.
