Wait till you get (back) to map 22 or 24... then they start to come in another form :P
* They are very common
* They have a lot of HP
* They deal a LOT of damage when they hit you
* The rockets the fire are homing, and so accurate that the only realistic way of dodging them is to try to go hide behind something... which also isn't always enough
In D1 I would say the heavy hulk is the most painful to deal with because of the homing missile spam - there aren't always "safe" ways to kill it. Class 1 drillers can be bad if they get the jump on you, but they're almost no threat if they don't, so they don't get my vote.

I was coming on here to say exactly that. Figures you'd be the one to beat me to it.
Cause fear is a huge emotion and in games like Descent you want to be able to evoke that in your players. Without turning it into frustration though.
My favorites are the Medium Lifters though, they are like cuddly little kittens.
They're squishy and sweet like cake. http://www.tomandcatherine.com/liftercake.jpg
