Descent

Descent

A modern game with a descent-like concept
I've always had great memories about this game, and seeing this game appear on steam made me look for some vids with gameplay on youtube.

It was enough for me to realise i'm not really interested in buying this old game anymore, i guess i'm just not much of a retro-gamer. However, i was surprised how great the concept of gameplay holds up after almost 20 years. Building levels in all directions that, although constantly messing with your orientation, you learn to master. A ship that enables you to perfectly navigate in these mazes and feels completely suitable for combatting enemies on your way.

Why on earth has this concept never been re-used in future games? Descent is like a perfect blueprint for any developer to build a modern game on.

Or have i been missing games that are heavily inspired on descent? If so, please enlighten my small brain...

And tell me if you agree with me or not? Perhaps i'm alone in this observation

You have been missing a few games inspired by Descent... but I just said this in another thread and I'm not writing my whole post again.
And copy-pasting feels cheap.

There's one every few years. The current favorite seems to be Talon (http://www.talongame.com/) , though Geocore is also worth a look (http://geo-core.net/).

I want Descent Freespace :(

Freespace != Descent.

So my brain actually is as small as i expected it to be. I never heard of all the titles you suggested and thank you for it. Especially Retrovirus seems like the spiritual successor i've been looking for. Thanks a million! :)

I've played 1-2 hours of Retrovirus during the free weekend and did not like it at all - the enemies weren't challenging and did not present any serious threat, and the levels were almost 100% linear. Maybe it gets better later, but I did not want to continue after my experience with it.

You mentioned Talon, Retrovirus and Miner Wars, are there any others that are not listed above?

Those three are the only ones I've played. I don't think there are any others out right now, but there are some in development.
I'm currently one of the devs on a project to "remake" Descent on the Unreal 3 engine.

Games like that wouldn't take off nowadays, unless it had killstreaks, build-your-own spaceship stuff etc. This is definately the job of an indie developer.

Heck that doesn't even sound too bad.

I think the closest thing we have to a modern Decent (imo at least) is X3, yes i know you aren't wandering through corridors beating robots infected with a virus (and in some cases looking cool at the same time) but there is a robot faction which is very similar but it's good to hear someone wants to remake this amazing classic.

I apologize in advance for what is essentially an advertisement, but I speak the truth here. The closest thing to a modern Descent is going to be Geocore. Geocore is my game and is designed from the ground up to be a "spiritual successor" to Descent, I am a long time pilot of the series. I have paid the Greenlight fee for my title but I am not sure I am ready for that level of exposure yet, as Geocore is only in alpha state right now. I am however looking for testers.
