Descent

Descent

La_Cucaracha Feb 12, 2014 @ 12:42am
Descent mod for TCP/IP multiplayer, Modern GFX cards, maps and more!
http://www.dxx-rebirth.com/download-dxx-rebirth/

Download the "Automatic Windows Installer"

When the game asks you to browse to an install directory, choose your steamapps\descent folder. Usually something like.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Descent

It will ask you to select the source folder. Choose the same spot.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Descent

Another point in the install will ask you what to install. Just choose the options for Descent 1 (d1) and make sure that the maps are checked on.

Multiplayer:

You'll need to forward port 42424 to your game machine in order to host a game. Joining a game doesn't have this requirement.

Another thing to add. This modification has to be launched with the d1x icon. You can add it as a non steam game.

Isn't there already several DX Rebirth preach threads? Better off writing a guide.

I saw the top preach thread not really point towards the automated install, which has all the base features I think new players would want.

I just got done playing minerva with a guy named Slayer and nwf. It'd be sort of neat if Valve got together with the d1x authors and actually made it part of the default install.

Meh more things I just gotta harp about.

D1x installs OPL3, but I remember the yamaha GX daughterboards having a much better sound.

yeah but 74% of Descent players most likely heard it through OPL3 first. a lesser percent through OPL2 and an even lesser with a wavetable-based synth. I personally prefer OPL3 since I believe in an uncanny valley effect with wavetable and older games.

The steam release blindsided us in the active Descent community, but we're doing our best to get the latest dxx-rebirth/retro mod version into the official download.

In the mean time, use A Future Pilot's installer: http://www.dxx-rebirth.com/download/dxx/user/afuturepilot/download.php?f=DXX-Rebirth_Setup.exe

Any chance to could tell me how to forward port 42424 to the game machine/router, I'm a little confused by that.

The instructions are different on each router, but basically look for "Port Forwarding" or "Games and applications" on your router. Create a new port forwarding rule for 42424. Whatever machine you're playing/hosting a game on, you'll need to enter that as the destination.

Awesome. I hope our Lord and Savior Gaben throws some resources to improving the d1x code. Would be neat to see achievements, other steam centric perks in there.

La_Cucaracha, if you look at the guides page, there is a way to install rebirth without having to add it as a non-steam game.

Hi Blarget. Ya I just read it. If I understand correctly it invovles editing the batch file that launches descentr.exe to point at the new d1x binaries. I'll try and write a proper guide tonight when I get home that includes that. Maybe I'll give the d1x team a hand with the installer, I'm pretty good using NSIS.
