Playing Descent 1 with Xbox One controller

I really want to configure Steam/DOSbox/Descent so I can play Descent 1 with my Xbox One controller. I'm a newbie, but from what I can tell, there are a few different "layers":

- Steam controller support / Steam Big Picture mode controller mapping
- DOSbox controller support / DOSbox key mapper
- Descent joystick config

I am started Steam Big Picture mode and selected the default mapping for twin stick shooters. I launched Descent, which launches DOSbox, and then I hit Ctrl-F1 to launch the DOSbox Mapper. Following the Mapper guide on the DOSbox wiki (https://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Mapper), I mapped the Y-axis [up/down] to the right stick. However, when I try to map the X-axis [left/right], the Mapper does not recognize pushing the right stick to the left or right.

Why isn't the X-axis recognized? Is it due to...
- Steam's controller support?
- Steam's Big Picture mode input mapper?
- DOSbox's controller support?

Same Problem man. More of a noob than you by a long shot, and ive also found an issue that it doesnt register the triggers either. i cant find proper info anywhere for an answer but someone must know.

The best thing to do is use the Source Port called "DXX-Rebirth." It doesn't change the game, just makes it compatible with modern systems. It has full joystick and gamepad support natively so you just go to config, enably joystick, and the game will detect your controller.

i havent been able to get DXX rebirth to work. im relatively new to PC and havent been able to get it going.

You can add me as a friend, I'm usually on steam sometimes on weekends and I can help out. Alternatively, you can look up the various Descent related Discord servers and get help there. I'd recommend the server for the Descent spiritual-successor: Overload. It's kind of the branching point for all the other related servers. You can easily find helpful people there who will walk you through setting up Rebirth to get some Descent action going.

You can also find some multiplayer games there and experience the fun of 1v1 anarchy :)

There's a DXX rebirth installer that can copy the game data from Steam:

(It's a somewhat older version but that shouldn't matter much for single player gaming)

you can alternatively use xpadder and bind keyboard buttons to pad buttons

I used to have a Moga controller, maybe still do. There's a program called MogaSerial that adds windows support and mimics an X360 controller, it worked for me years ago.
