Running DXX Rebirth through Steam
So I tried to get the DXX Rebirth running through stram using the methods of putting the Rebirth files in the game folder and renaminf the Rebirth exe. It didn’t worl for me at all. Then I teied running in normally im dosbox and O still got an error. I am using Win 10.

Any help?

It’s not a huge issue simce I am trying to run in on my laptop and not my gaming pc. My laptop would just be convenient since I can play Descent more.

I could not get the mouse to work in dosbox. I made the rebirth directories (copies) and imported the listed files and it plays soooo nice and looks great. The steam directories are still there and it still runs through steam in dosbox. With rebirth you start the game with the rebirth exe file you don't use any of the dosbox stuff, view the readme in the rebirth files. They are still trying to figure out how to make it run in steam overlay. It does not count the time you played. I should try swapping these folders into the steam ones and renaming and see if steam runs it, when I have time. I think that is the idea with renaming the rebirth file.

Hi there, I just copied the rebirth files overwriting the eventual copies with the same name, and added a new "non steam game" pointing out at the dx1 rebirth executable. Then I created a category "SOURCEPORTS" in Steam so I have the separated list of sourceports actually installed in my system. This worked flawlessy. Hope this helps.

I put rebirth in as a non steam game and it will run, though the mouse would not click on the player select I had to use arrow keys and return but it would work when the game started. It did not track the time played it only showed it as most recent game played. I don't really care I guess, but its still not right. And the first time the steam box came up in the decent resolution that was huge, next time it came up decent full screen as normal.

Heya, I just wanted to add that this process is easier than you think:

  1. I put my "dxx-rebirth_etc-win" installation folder in the Descent's installation directory
    SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Descent
  2. So it's this:
    SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Descent\dxx-rebirth_20220929-win\
  3. I also copied over my save files "<pilot_name>.SG0" and "<pilot_name>.PLR" to the "..\Descent\dxx-rebirth_etc-win\Data" folder (I had to create the "Data" folder)
  4. While you're in the Descent folder listed first above, you should see the file:
    launch descent.bat
  5. Edit that in your favorite editor (or Notepad)
  6. Comment out or delete the first (and only) line in there.
  7. Paste in there this line:
    dxx-rebirth_20220929-win\D1X-Rebirth\d1x-rebirth.exe
  8. (Make sure your "dxx-rebirth_DATE-win" folder name matches your actual dxx-rebirth installation folder name)
  9. Save and close
Now when you start the game from Steam, your pilot's save should be there and the D1X-rebirth engine should work!

You guys are making this way more complicated than it needs to be. Just set up Rebirth so it works, and then use Steams' "Add a Game" option in the lower left to add the executable to your games list. It's "Add a Non-Steam Game" as the option, and just do that. Don't need all that weird stuff I see.
