Multiple materials are not support yet. Can you try exporting the mesh from maya with a single material?
As a workaround, if each material is separated as single mesh, you can use the Fill object tool to target particular areas with color. For example, say you have the body and as shirt. You can use the fill object tool to fill the shirt mesh a different color.
Turns out if you have multiple materials at all with the mesh then it will not be paintable. Tested on the side having multiple meshes but same result.
So, single meshes and single materials per painted mesh, thats the solution.
Not a problem really, you should really be using one material/uv map with a program like this if possible.

One is having multiple materials exported from Maya's scene in general
Second is UV Space. Originally the UVs were outside the 0 to 1 UV Space. I moved them to that area and it began working!
I'd still suggest to users to use only one mesh at a time, at least for now.
