Single Channel Painting Tip
Hey,

If you would like to paint on a single channel at a time rather than a full material, you can use layer groups to target specific channels.

For example, if you want to paint only in diffuse, you can create a layer group in the layer stack and set that group to only effect diffuse. Any layers you place in the group, will then adhere to the setup of the group and only effect the diffuse channel.

To do this, create a new layer group in the layer stack. Select the group, from the drop down menu at the top of the layer stack and select the channel you want to effect. For example, choose diffuse and then make sure the blend mode for the group is set to Norm. To disable the other channels, go back to the channel drop down list at the top of the layer stack and choose a channel you don't want to effect such as roughness. With the channel set to roughness, go to the blending mode for the group and choose disable for the blending mode. Do this for all channels you don't want this layer group effect. Now, every new layer you add to this group will only effect the channels setup by the layer group.

I found this to be a nice workflow for building up my texture channel by channel.

Cheers,

Wes

Cool! Hope it helps. I used it and it was really helpful. I like to paint on a single channel at a time and this worked perfectly. It's cool that you can then create a new group to work on multiple channels. For my project, I needed to add veins to a skin texture so I created a new layer group and set that group to only effect diffuse and height.
