Projection Tool Resolution
http://www.ratsarmy.com/SP_Projection.jpg

Look at the image and you can see a huge problem with the projection tool. There's a massive resolution loss on the image being projected, making it next to impossible to accurately project things. It actually appears that the maximum resolution of the texture displayed OUTSIDE of the brush radius, is in the range of 8 to 32 pixels MAX! Inside the brush radius, it might be something like 512.

Once projected, the texture is 100% fine.

Now, in this image, the actual projected texture is 4096. I did that because I thought maybe I could make up for the fact that it's downrezzing the texture but in fact, it made it a LOT worse.

I didn't bother taking a screenshot of a 2048 or 1024 projection texture, but trust me that it's about as useless. However, those resolutions actually do show a decent image but ONLY inside of the brush radius. Outside of the brush radius, it's about 8 pixels tops.

So I have to make my brush the size of the entire screen to line up my projection and then shrink it down when I'm ready to actually use it.

I hate to say it, but this tool is just totally garbage in its current state and it absolutely MUST be fixed and I personally think that it should be the number one priority for the development team. Not just for me and this project I have right now, but for all of us.

Considering that we have what, 4 brush tools? How can you just let a quarter of that entire toolbar contain something that is so beyond broken that it literally shocks me that nobody else is up in arms about this.

I've mentioned this at least 5 times now and there's no response about it and as far as I know, the developers aren't even aware of the problem. This can't stand as is. This can't fly.

This MUST be fixed and it must be fixed right now.

Please, get somebody on this.

Hello,

I'm sorry your are experiencing this issue. Its hard to tell exactly what is going on from the image you posted. I understand you are experiencing resolution issues with the projection tool and it sounds like the stencil preview is low res which makes it very hard to align, but the actual data that is projected is fine.

As far as I am aware, this hasn't been bugged or brought up in our forums by other users. You stated that this is the 5th time you have mentioned the issue without response. Please let me know where you have submitted this issue. I apologize if this has been overlooked.

As a user myself, working in the tool on a daily basis, I have not experienced this issue, nor has this issue every been brought to my attention. What size is the image you are trying to use with the projection tool? Can you send me the image you are trying to project so I can try an recreate the issue?

I completely understand your frustration and we definitely want to resolve issues that are reported. However, I would encourage you to be a bit more constructive on posting issues. Perhaps a more specific title to the thread would be more productive to not only us for finding issues, but also other users who may be experiencing the same problem. Posting by the title "worst bug ever" is not very constructive for anyone.

Cheers,

Wes

I adjusted the title. I only titled it that way due to the epic level of frustration and I apologize. I really am desperate for this to be addressed because I use this tool on just about every model I paint. Sometimes I just go into Mudbox and project it there and then import the image.

You are correct about what the problem is. It's fine once projected but super low res in the stamp preview mode.

I would send you an image but it's every single image I try to use with the projection tool. It's been this way for me since the day I got Painter.

I understand that this is just me and my system that has this problem, but I can't understand why this is the only tool in the only application that has ever had any sort of resolution display errors. I'll try to roll my GPU drivers back or something. Will let you know if I have any success.

I have same problem sometimes, not sure why projection tool stencil preview is very low res, also running an GTX 770.

Hi,

Thanks very much for adjusting the title. I totally understand your frustration. I have spoken with the devs and we do have an issue with the projection tool UI. It seems to be capped at 512 for the stencil display. This issue has been logged and we are working on the fix.

Thanks for reporting this issue.

Cheers,

Wes

Hi,

I think this is the same issue. We found a problem where the stencil display is capped at 512 pixel resolution. We have logged this issue and we will get it fixed.

Cheers,

Wes
