Hello, if you have got a same problem like my and you can't run CaC Generals because of error during starting of the game "please make sure you have Directx 8.1 or higher installed..." Then there is SOLUTION:

Go into \Steam\steamapps\common\Command & Conquer Generals - Zero Hour and in this folder find file dbghelp.dll and delete it or rename it to something different.

Hey! Had the same error when i had genlauncher installed for the contra mod. But that was on the EA play app. However this solution didn't help me. What i found out was that my virus program had discretely blocked it from opening, and it got this error in its stead. If any one else has the problem, it could be your anti-virus program blocking, or it could be the dbghelp.dll

Try use DGVoodoo2 (copy the content of x86 in the MS folder into the main directory of the game), if the above metioned method will not work for you. That did work for me.

I made a guide with multiple fixes and confirmed it works with no external software downloads!

I found the file (options.ini) in my C-drive --> Users --> User --> Documents --> Command and Conquer Generals Data (+Zero Hour) --> Options.
There I just pasted the above text into that file.

NOTE: You may need to change the 14th line, Resolution, to whatever your native resolution is. For me, it was "2560 1440". But for others it may be less.

Also, you need to initially start the game and let it give you the "technical difficulties" error, and then do the same thing with the Zero Hours expansion, before changing the (options.ini) file.

I had the same error. Followed the guide noted in TristanDolfin's Mar 7 @ 6:03pm post to the letter and it worked perfectly. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
